One further step:
Starting school at 10am, rather than 1-2 hours earlier at the crack of dawn, leads to substantially reduced absenteeism.
This is not the first evidence that the farmers are oppressing us night owls.

I apparently didn't get the memo explaining why kids start and end their school day hours before most adults start and end their work day.
I'm fairly convinced it's actual, honest-to-god sadism.
Adults get mad at kids for being kids and so punish them by making them get up early.
Also, waking someone up in the middle of their night tends to tranquilize them. They can't learn crap, but they also don't have the energy to 'misbehave.'
Finally, it could be the "kids hate it - therefore it's good for them" BS, which is at least a more charitable interpretation than sadism.
