The Four Answers

If someone asks a yes-no question...there are ~ 5 honorable responses:

The easy ones.

  • Yes.
  • No.
The harder ones:
  • I don't know
  • With probability near X
  • I do not wish to answer
And the hardest one:
  • Your question is broken
The first two collapse to #4 pretty easily...and #3 also collapses to #4 after more work.

IF you are asked a (binary) question, then, there are three good answers:
  • Decline to answer
  • I have an X% certainty that the probabilty of True is within Y% of Z%.
    • Alternately, Z% estimate, with stdv of Y%.
  • Your question is broken
Never forget that the question may be at fault.

Yes/no questions are almost always broken.

The guys at work joke that I can never answer a question with a simple yes/no, but only with an entire paragraph.
